Embarking on a Journey Through Time- A Field Trip to the Science Museum of Guangzhou

In a thrilling adventure of discovery, EY3 students recently embarked on a captivating field trip to the Science Museum of Guangzhou. This excursion aligned perfectly with their ongoing unit of inquiry, “Where We Are in Place and Time,” which aimed to explore how people can learn from the past to make better decisions in the future. The students were brimming with excitement as they set foot in the museum, eager to uncover the mysteries of history and science.
“Age of Dinosaurs
As the young learners made their way through the museum, their eyes widened with wonder as they encountered the first exhibit: dinosaur fossils. Towering skeletons of long-extinct creatures loomed overhead, transporting the students back millions of years. With awe and amazement, they marveled at the scale and diversity of these ancient beings. The students were captivated by the enormous T-Rex, the graceful Stegosaurus, and the swift Velociraptor. This encounter with the prehistoric giants ignited their curiosity and provided a tangible connection to the distant past.

“Exhibit on Cave Men
Moving on from the age of dinosaurs, the students found themselves immersed in a world inhabited by early humans. The exhibit on cave men shed light on the lives and struggles of our ancient ancestors. The students were fascinated by the replicas of primitive tools, clothing, and dwelling structures. They realised that these early humans had to rely on their ingenuity and resourcefulness to survive in harsh environments. Observing the exhibits, the students began to grasp the concept of human progress and the idea that we have come a long way from our humble beginnings.

Thinker
As the field trip progressed, the students began to comprehend the central idea of their unit of inquiry: that people can learn from the past to make better decisions in the future. They realised that by studying the remains of dinosaurs and the lives of cave men, they were gaining valuable insights into the world around them. They recognised the importance of preserving the environment, just as the dinosaurs’ extinction highlighted the fragility of ecosystems. They also began to understand the significance of technological advancements and the impact they have on human lives, drawing a parallel between the ingenuity of early humans and the innovative breakthroughs of the present day. They tried to imagine a world without electricity and their first thoughts were ‘how would they live without a tablet/ipad?’

The field trip to the Science Museum of Guangzhou provided EY3 students with a unique opportunity to witness the wonders of both ancient history and scientific progress. By encountering dinosaur fossils and exploring the lives of cave men, the students were able to connect with the past and draw valuable lessons for the future. As they left the museum with a newfound appreciation for the journey humanity has undertaken, the students were inspired to make thoughtful decisions that would contribute to a better and more sustainable future.
