ISA Tianhe brings together a group of teachers from around the world, who are highly qualified teachers with average teaching experience of more than 10 years. As IB practitioners, they are proficient in inquire-based teaching and possess a high level of intercultural competence, and passion for education and children. Among them, the international teachers are from the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and other native English-speaking countries. The Chinese teachers and Associate Teachers are bilingual and selected from the international and national system.

Differentiated learning in Early Years recognises that every child develops and learns at their own pace. Teachers carefully consider each student’s current level of understanding, learning needs, strengths and interests when planning and delivering learning experiences. Through personalised teaching strategies, appropriate levels of challenge and targeted support, students are able to access learning in ways that best meet their individual needs. This approach ensures that every child is appropriately supported and challenged, enabling them to make meaningful progress and develop confidence as a learner.

In Early Years, differentiated learning is particularly important as it enables teachers to respond effectively to each student’s individual learning needs and stage of development. In areas such as Reading, Chinese, English and Maths, students may work in flexible groups according to their current level of understanding and learning needs. This approach allows teachers to provide appropriate levels of support and challenge while also creating opportunities for students to collaborate, communicate and learn alongside their peers. Working with students in smaller, focused groups also enables the teaching team to monitor individual progress closely and adapt teaching accordingly.

Language Programme

Language is fundamental to all learning and plays a crucial role in how students understand, explore and engage with the world. At ISA Tianhe, we offer a range of language programmes, including English as an Additional Language (EAL), Chinese and Mother Tongue provision, to support students’ individual language development and enable them to access learning confidently across the curriculum.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

From EY3, EAL support is available to students who would benefit from additional English-language instruction. The programme is designed to strengthen students’ foundations in English, develop their language skills and build their confidence as English speakers. Alongside five weekly Literacy lessons, EAL sessions provide additional opportunities for students to develop the English-language skills needed to communicate effectively and engage confidently with their learning.

EAL teachers focus on developing core language skills, including reading comprehension, writing, grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary, while also building students’ confidence and fluency in spoken English. Through regular targeted support, teachers help students develop the language needed to access learning across the curriculum and participate increasingly independently in classroom activities.

Chinese Programme

ISA Tianhe’s Chinese Programme embraces the philosophy of an IB education while celebrating and integrating elements of Chinese and Western cultures. The programme provides students with engaging opportunities to develop their Chinese language skills while building an understanding and appreciation of China’s rich cultural heritage. Through inquiry-based and experiential learning, including animation, video, outdoor exploration and calligraphy activities, students are encouraged to use Chinese in meaningful and practical contexts.

Our Chinese curriculum combines core and elective learning opportunities to provide both structured language development and opportunities for cultural exploration. Students in EY1 and EY2 attend three core Chinese lessons each week, building strong foundations in the language. In EY3 and EY4, students attend four core Chinese lessons each week, further developing their understanding, communication and expression in Chinese.

To deepen students’ interest in and understanding of Chinese culture, additional elective Chinese lessons are offered from EY2 to EY4. These lessons connect with Chinese cultural inquiry units in the Primary curriculum, with themes and learning experiences carefully adapted to be engaging and developmentally appropriate for Early Years students.

From EY3, students have opportunities to receive dedicated tuition in their mother tongue, supporting the continued development of their home language alongside English and Chinese.

Unit of Inquiry

The six transdisciplinary themes are an important part of the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) framework, providing students with opportunities to explore significant concepts and make meaningful connections across different areas of learning. In Early Years, students engage in an in-depth Unit of Inquiry approximately every six to eight weeks, exploring learning through play, investigation, discussion and hands-on experiences.

Linked to their Units of Inquiry (UOI), students participate in field trips to a variety of locations, extending their learning beyond the classroom and providing opportunities to explore concepts in real-world contexts. Through meaningful, hands-on experiences, students deepen their understanding, develop new skills and make connections between their classroom learning and the world around them. Field trips encourage students to engage with nature, the local community and wider society, while nurturing their curiosity, creativity and enthusiasm for exploration and discovery.

Maths

Mathematics in Early Years develops progressively across key areas including number, numerical patterns, shape, space and measure. Through practical, hands-on learning, children develop their understanding of numbers and, as they progress through Early Years, work increasingly confidently with numbers to 20 and beyond. They explore mathematical concepts such as doubling, halving and sharing, and use everyday mathematical language to investigate size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money. Children also recognise, create and describe patterns, explore the properties of everyday objects and shapes, and develop the mathematical vocabulary needed to explain their thinking and solve problems.

White Rose Maths forms an important part of our mathematics curriculum, providing a structured approach to developing mathematical understanding and progression. With five Maths lessons each week, teaching emphasises a mastery approach, allowing students to explore concepts in depth, build secure foundations and apply their mathematical knowledge flexibly in different contexts. Learning progresses carefully and systematically, with appropriate support and challenge provided according to students’ individual needs.

After-School Programme

From EY2, students have the opportunity to participate in the school’s After-School Programme, which runs from 16:20 to 17:20, Monday to Friday. A range of age-appropriate activities is available, with options across the arts and sports. These may include piano, drama, art and speech, as well as ballet, fencing, fitness training and pop dance.

Will students learn phonics in Literacy classes?

Yes. From EY2 onwards, students at ISA Tianhe receive daily phonics instruction as part of their Literacy lessons, Monday to Friday. Students are given regular opportunities to apply their phonics knowledge through reading and writing activities, both within Literacy lessons and across other areas of the curriculum, including Units of Inquiry (UOI) and Maths. This integrated approach helps students develop confidence in using their phonics skills in meaningful learning contexts.

Is there any homework in Early Years?

Yes. Home learning in Early Years is carefully designed to reinforce classroom learning and provide meaningful opportunities for students to practise and share their learning at home. From EY2 onwards, students receive a reading book each day and are encouraged to read regularly at home. Families can support this by discussing the story together, asking and answering comprehension questions, and talking about characters, events and new vocabulary.

Every Friday, all Early Years students receive Talk Homework. These activities are designed either to revisit and reinforce important vocabulary and concepts learned during the week or to introduce key vocabulary in preparation for upcoming learning. Talk Homework also provides a valuable opportunity for children to share their learning with their families and develop their confidence in speaking and expressing their ideas.

As a parent, how can I understand my child’s learning content and progress?

We believe that strong communication between home and school is an important part of supporting every child’s learning and development. Each class has its own WeCom account, enabling regular communication between parents and teachers. Teachersshare photos and learning updates through WeCom Moments, giving families an insight into their child’s daily experiences, learning and progress at school.

Early Years also holds a weekly assembly, with parents invited to selected assemblies and special events throughout the year. These occasions provide opportunities for families to visit the school, celebrate students’ achievements and see some of the learning, performances and experiences that children have been preparing in class.

What activities or competitions can Early Years take part in?

Throughout Early Years, students are encouraged to develop their curiosity, confidence, learning habits and foundational skills through a wide range of activities and experiences. These include Unit of Inquiry activities, performances, Sports Days, field trips, story-sharing activities and other special events that provide opportunities for students to explore their interests, develop new skills and celebrate their learning.

In EY4, students have the opportunity to participate in graded LAMDA (London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art) assessments. What specialist lessons are offered in Early Years? Are these lessons taught fully in English?

Early Years students participate in a range of specialist lessons, including PE, Art, Music and Library, with IT introduced from EY3. With the exception of Chinese, specialist lessons are taught in English, providing students with additional opportunities to hear, understand and use English naturally in different contexts. Through engaging, practical learning experiences, students develop their confidence in communicating in English while also building subject-specific knowledge and skills.
