One’s handwriting reflects their inner mind and character. As the root of Chinese culture, Chinese characters also serve as a vital tool for communication. To foster a strong scholarly atmosphere on campus, and to guide students to appreciate the structural beauty and artistic charm of Chinese characters while developing good writing habits, our school was holding a hard-tipped calligraphy competition themed “Writing the Beauty of Chinese Characters, Experiencing the Charm of the Chinese Language”.
书为心画，字如其人。汉字是中华文化的根脉，亦是表情达意的重要工具。为营造浓厚的书香氛围，引导学生在阅读之余，感受汉字的结构之美、形意之韵，培养良好的书写习惯，爱莎天河特举办 “书写汉字之美，感受中文魅力” 硬笔书法比赛。
Every Stroke Has Its Principle
一笔一划皆有法
This competition was not only a showcase, but also a learning experience. Before the official writing contest, Chinese teachers from all grades jointly held a hard-tipped calligraphy teaching and guidance session. They explained key points such as sitting posture, pen-holding methods, basic strokes, structural rules, and neat paper layout separately to students in the native Chinese and non-native Chinese groups. Both inside and outside class, the students listened attentively and practiced earnestly, making full preparations for the competition.
比赛不仅是一次展示，更是一次学习。在正式书写之前，各年级中文老师共同开展硬笔书法教学指导课，面向母语组与非母语组同学分别讲解了坐姿与握笔、基本笔画、结构规律、卷面整洁等要领。课堂内外，同学们听得认真，练得投入，为比赛做好了充分准备。
Every Writing Shows True Mastery
一纸一笔见功夫
On the day of the competition, each classroom was turned into a calligraphy workshop. Students were given official competition paper and asked to write classic Chinese poems, including Thoughts on a Quiet Night, Spring Dawn, and Painting for lower grades, and Autumn Evening in the Mountains for middle and upper grades.The scene was quiet and orderly, with only the soft rustle of pens on paper. Students were fully focused, some carefully planning their characters, others writing fluently in one go. Under their hands, Chinese characters came to life: horizontal strokes like gentle clouds, vertical strokes like sturdy pines, left-falling strokes like willow leaves, and right-falling strokes like sharp blades.Although non-native speakers wrote at a slightly slower pace, they treated each stroke with great care; some even practiced repeatedly on draft paper, showing admirable dedication.
比赛当天，各班教室化身“书法工坊”。统一发放比赛用纸，书写内容为经典古诗词,低年级有《静夜思》《春晓》《画》等，中高年级有《山居秋暝》等。现场安静有序，只闻笔尖沙沙作响。同学们全神贯注，或凝神构思，或一气呵成。汉字在他们笔下有了生命——横如云，竖如松，撇如柳叶，捺如刀锋。非母语组的同学们虽然书写速度稍慢，但一笔一画认真对待，有的还特意在练习纸上反复描摹，精神可嘉。
Once the writing session was completed, the competition moved to the most popular peer review and voting segment. Students exchanged calligraphy works with classmates from other classes in the same grade. Equipped with two “Calligraphy Star” stickers each, they carefully viewed all entries and voted for the most outstanding works. During this interactive process, students learned to appreciate others’ strengths and reflect on their own shortcomings in handwriting through comparison.
书写结束后，比赛进入了最受欢迎的环节——互相阅览与投票。各班作品同年级互相交换，同学们手持两枚“书法小星星”贴纸，依次浏览所有作品，为自己认为最优秀的作品，贴上星星。阅览过程中，孩子们不仅学会了欣赏他人的优点，也在比较中反思自己的书写不足。
Every Effort Shines
每份努力都闪光
After combining votes from students and all Chinese teachers, outstanding participants were selected as “Little Calligraphy Masters” across each grade level. The Chinese Department held a formal award ceremony during the elementary school assembly, which was filled with warm applause. All participants received honorary certificates and stationery prizes to encourage them to keep exploring the beauty of Chinese characters in their future studies.
Silent yet expressive, every Chinese character conveys profound emotions. Each stroke embodies concentration, good learning habits, as well as the inheritance and confidence of traditional culture. Though the calligraphy competition has come to an end, students’ passion for Chinese characters and their earnest attitude toward writing have just begun to take root.
最终，综合学生和全体中文老师的投票，我们评选出各年级组的“书法小达人”。在小学集会上，中文组举行了隆重的颁奖仪式。全场掌声不断。所有参赛同学获得了荣誉证书和文具奖品，鼓励他们在未来的学习中继续书写汉字之美。

Chinese characters convey profound emotions through silent strokes. Every carefully crafted line cultivates students’ focus, meticulousness, cultural confidence, and an enduring appreciation for traditional Chinese heritage. The successful conclusion of the handwriting competition has offered students a valuable platform to explore the aesthetic charm of Chinese characters and refine their writing skills, nurturing a sincere passion for Chinese language and culture within every learner. As an international school, we place great emphasis on Chinese literacy education. Rooted in native cultural heritage while embracing global perspectives, our holistic teaching approach empowers students to solidify their linguistic foundation, broaden their cultural horizons, and enhance their comprehensive humanistic competencies. Beyond campus activities, our students have consistently excelled in prestigious domestic and international Chinese competitions. At the 6th Chinese Festival, ISA Tianhe students delivered outstanding performances, securing 14 championships, 6 runner-ups and 6 third places across recitation, writing, composition and speech events. In the highly competitive 5th International Youth Chinese Writing Competition open to global participants, two of our students earned Excellence Awards, standing out with their proficient language expression and unique critical thinking.
汉字无言，却可传情。横竖撇捺的笔墨之间，淬炼的是专注细致的良好素养，涵养的是根植本土、面向世界的文化自信，更是中华优秀文脉的薪火相传。本次硬笔书法比赛圆满落幕，不仅为同学们搭建了感受汉字之美、锤炼书写功底的平台，更让热爱中文、潜心研习的种子在每位学子心中悄然生长。作为国际化校园，爱莎天河始终高度重视中文素养教育，坚持以中文教学为根基，融合多元育人理念，助力学生夯实语言基础、拓宽文化视野、提升综合人文能力。不止于校内笔墨深耕，爱莎天河学子在各类国内外中文赛事舞台上同样大放异彩、屡获殊荣。在第六届汉语节中，爱莎天河学子凭借扎实的中文功底与稳定出色的发挥，一举斩获14项冠军、6项亚军、6项季军，在诵读、书写、写作、演讲等多维度赛项中全方位展现综合中文实力；在竞争激烈、面向全球青少年的第五届国际青少年中文写作大赛中，两名学子凭借流畅地道的中文表达、新颖独特的思辨视角斩获“优异奖”，在全球众多参赛者中脱颖而出。
These remarkable achievements reflect students’ consistent diligence and fully validate our school’s internationalized Chinese education philosophy and diversified teaching system. Moving forward, we will continue to prioritize high-quality Chinese education.
