EY3’s Learning Journey and Visit to the Museum

2026-07-01

This term, EY3 students embarked on an exciting journey of discovery through their Unit of Inquiry, “Where We Are in Place and Time.” The central idea—understanding how people use a variety of tools and processes to learn about and record their past—guided students through a rich and engaging learning experience.

The unit began with a personal connection, as students explored their own histories. They shared stories about their families and important events in their lives, helping them develop a sense of identity and belonging. By creating simple timelines, students began to understand the concepts of past, present, and future in a meaningful and age-appropriate way.

As their understanding grew, students investigated how people long ago recorded their experiences. They explored cave art and Greek pottery, discovering that early humans used drawings and objects to tell stories and communicate ideas. This helped students recognise that recording information is a practice that has existed for thousands of years.

A major highlight of the unit was learning about dinosaurs and fossils. Students discovered that fossils are clues from the past that help us understand how living things once existed. They were introduced to the role of palaeontologists, learning about the careful tools and processes used to uncover and study fossils. This knowledge came to life during a hands-on dinosaur dig experience at school, where students acted as “junior palaeontologists,” practising excavation skills with care and precision.

Museum Trip: Travel Back to Prehistory

The culmination of the unit was a memorable field trip to the Grandview Museum of Natural Science. The museum provided an immersive environment filled with fascinating exhibits and interactive learning opportunities. Students were amazed by the life-sized dinosaur models and the extensive collection of fossils, minerals, and specimens from around the world—including the rare Medusaceratops fossil.

During the visit, students made meaningful connections between their classroom learning and real-world experiences. They explored fossil displays and asked thoughtful questions about how dinosaurs lived, what they ate, and why they became extinct. Their curiosity and enthusiasm were evident throughout the visit.

In addition to the dinosaur exhibits, students explored ancient Chinese history, learning about Oracle Bone Script, one of the earliest forms of Chinese writing. Through a guided experience, they discovered how people in the past recorded information using symbols carved into bones. Inspired by this learning, students created their own symbolic art pieces, deepening their understanding through creativity and hands-on expression.

Throughout the unit and the field trip, students demonstrated key IB Learner Profile attributes, particularly as Inquirers, Thinkers, and Communicators. They asked questions, shared their ideas confidently, and reflected on their learning experiences.
